Focus and Scope
The SAMJ is a monthly peer reviewed, internationally indexed, general medical journal. It carries research articles and letters, editorials, clinical practice and other medical articles and personal opinion, South African health-related news, obituaries, general correspondence, and classified advertisements.

Editors either provide the editors page(s)material or may commision it

Editors highlight and summarise select material from the jounal
Briewe (letters)
Letters to the editor are considered for publication by the editor
Izindaba
Topical medical and medico-political matters are invesigated and reported in depth
Forum
'Forum' accommodates a wide variety of material such as clinical practice, medical history, education, controversial issues, book reviews, obituaries etc.
Book reviews
Independent reviews of books may be published. Books received are all listed.
Obituaries
Obituaries of practioners, medical scientists etc. may be published
Editorial
Editorials may be submitted by authors or commissioned by the editor. They may be self-standing or relate to articles in the journal.
Position Statement
Scientific letters
Short reports or scientific letters, which include case reports, side effects of drugs and brief or negative research findings should be 1000 words or less, with 1 table or illustration and no more than 6 references.
Original articles
Original articles of 3 000 words or less, with up to 6 tables or illustrations, should normally report observations or research of relevance to clinical medicine. References should preferably be limited to no more than 15.

Peer Review Process
Original articles are first reviewed by an Editorial Advisory Group who can recommend rejection or referral for review by one or more subject referees. Manuscripts from review may be accepted, returned to author for revision or rejected. All final decisions on a manuscript are at the editors discretion.
Publication Frequency
Journals are published on the first day of every month. Journal items are published as part of an issue with its own Table of Contents.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
